CHIESA PARROCCHIALE DI S. GIOVANNI BATTISTA (secolo XVII)

A metà XVII secolo la comunità di Castegnato avvertì l’esigenza di realizzare una parrocchiale più ampia rispetto alla piccola chiesa di San Giovanni, ora Santa Maria, troppo angusta e in cattivo stato di conservazione. Si decise di costruirne una nuova, trasferendovi il titolo con i diritti e i possedimenti collegati, ma conservando il vecchio luogo di culto per il cimitero e la dottrina cristiana delle donne. Per far fronte ai costi si utilizzò come materiale costruttivo le strutture dell’antichissima chiesa di San Zenone.
A coordinare la raccolta dei fondi fu don Giuseppe Peli (1653-1702), nominato parroco nella prima fase della realizzazione della fabbrica e la direzione dei lavori affidata ad Antonio e Bartolomeo Spazi. Posta la prima pietra il 25 aprile 1682, la chiesa venne consacrata il 17 settembre 1692. La costruzione comportò alcune modifiche: la facciata fu decorata da un portale di inizio XVIII secolo con la statua di San Giovanni Battista, opera di Antonio Callegari; il frontespizio venne concluso nel 1724 e restaurato nel 1898. Tra il 1932 e il 1938 la chiesa fu ampliata su progetto di Giovanni Zani, con l’aggiunta del transetto, del presbiterio e dei cornicioni.
L’altare maggiore, il tabernacolo e le balaustre, distinti da marmi policromi, sono stati realizzati nel 1748 da Alessandro Bonbastone e Vincenzo Baronsino. Ad ornare la sacra mensa dell’abside vi è una pala raffigurante la Sacra famiglia con san Giovannino e i santi Vitale e Antonio da Padova, opera di Sante Cattaneo; dello stesso autore sono L’imposizione del nome del Battista e San Luigi, dipinti collocati rispettivamente a destra e a sinistra del transetto. nella navata sono collocate dodici tele ad olio raffiguranti gli Apostoli, dipinte da Angelo Paglia nel 1714, e in controfacciata l’olio su tela con la Decollazione del Battista di Giacomo Ferraboschi. Nella chiesa vi sono quattro altari laterali: a sinistra si trova la mensa sacra dedicata ai Santi Filippo neri e Francesco di Sales, la cui pala descrive la loro visione dell’Immacolata, opera di Sante Cattaneo (1808); la seconda è intitolata al Crocifisso, decorata da statue in stucco, quali gli evangelisti Marco e Luca e tre angeli reggenti i simboli della Passione. A destra si colloca l’altare sotto il titolo di Sant’Anna con la pala della Madonna col Bambino tra i santi Gioacchino, Anna e l’Angelo custode di Giacomo Ferraboschi (1687), a cui segue quello dedicato alla Madonna e a San Vitale, con l’urna settecentesca contenente le reliquie del martire, è ornato dai tredici misteri del Rosario.

CHURCH OF St. JOHN BAPTIST

At mid XVII century the community of Castegnato needed to actualize a larger parish than the small church of San Giovanni, now Santa Maria, too restricted and in poor state of preservation. They decided to build a new one giving it the title with the rights and the connected properties, but keeping the old place of worship for the cemetery and the christian doctrine of the women. To cope with the costs, as constructive materials they used the structures of the very ancient church of San Zenone.
The fundraising was coordinate by don Giuseppe Peli (1653-1702), appointed parish priest during the first phase of the realization of the factory and the supervision of works given to Antonio and Bartolomeo Spazi. Laid the foundation stone on 25th April 1682, the church was consecrated on 17th September 1692. The construction implied some changes: the front was adorned with a portal of the beginning of the XVIII century with the statue of San Giovanni Battista, work of Antonio Callegari; the frontal was ended in 1724 and restored in 1898.
Between 1932 and 1938 the church was extended following the project of Giovanni Zani, with the addition of the transept, the presbytery and the moldings. The high altar, the tabernacle and the balustrades, made of polychrome marbles, have been made in 1748 by Alessandro Bonbastone and Vincenzo Baronsino. There is altarpiece representing the Holy Family with San Giovannino and saints Vitale and Antonio da Padova adorning the holy table of the apse, work of Sante Cattaneo; of the same author there are “L’imposizione del nome del Battista” and “San Luigi”, paintings respectively placed on the right and on the left of the transpet. In the nave there are twelve oil on canvas representing the apostles, painted by Angelo Paglia in 1714, and on the opposite the oil on canvas with the “Decollazione del Battista” of
Giacomo Ferraboschi. In the church there are four side altars: on the left there is the holy table dedicated to the saints Filippo Neri and Francesco di Sales, which altarpiece describes their vision of the Immaculate, work of Sante Cattaneo (1808); the second one is dedicated to the Crucifix, adorned with statues made of plaster, such as the evangelists Marco and Luca and three angels holding the symbols of the Passion. On the right there is the altar dedicated to Sant’Anna with the altarpiece of the Madonna with the Baby between the saints Gioacchino, Anna and the guardian Angel of Giacomo Ferraboschi (1687), and after you can see the one dedicated to the Madonna and to San Vitale, with the eighteenth century urn containing the relics of the martyr, adorned with thirteen mysteries of the Rosary.
